The Galactic Alliance Defense Force is divided into three branches: the Defense Fleet, Starfighter Corps, and Army. It furthermore includes the fourth and secret branch, the Galactic Alliance Guard.

All branches are under the authority of the Supreme Commander, a position appointed by the GA’s Chief of State and approved by the Senate. Each branch has its own hierarchy, headquartered at Coruscant, with the exception of the Guard, which has a much looser structure and no official headquarter.

The Defense Fleet

Most star systems within the Galactic Alliance are allowed their own planetary defense fleets, which are comprised of a wide variety of warships, from hulking vessels around Kuat to nimble and efficient ones in Corellia. These cannot generally be pressed into service by the GADF, and typically operate in the defense of their own star systems with a great degree of autonomy.

The heart of the GADF is the Expeditionary Fleet. Unlike planetary defense fleets, the GADF forces are highly-standardized, exclusively employing only a few starship designs. Most of the ships that compose the GADF are descendant designs of much earlier starships, which maintain the same overall profile and role of the earlier vessels, but modernized for the current tactical realities. This streamlining of the navy is recent, and most of the ships are cutting edge in their respective fields.

Viscount-class Dreadnought: The heaviest of the heavy, a ship that combines the scale and might of the venerable Executor class with Mon Calamari engineering and shielding. Only one of these ships is known to be in existence. One more is in drydock, under construction.

Bulwark-class Battlecruiser: Powerful line warships, which often serve as flagships for detached flotillas. They are famed for their resilience and for having their firepower spread equitably across all arcs.

Impellor-class Heavy Carrier: The youngest ship design in the GADF, the Impellor is smallest ship in the Defense Fleet to carry a full complement of ground forces, garrison bases and landing ships. It furthermore contains a gravity well generator with which to control the flow of space battles. It is a tough ship capable of deploying starfighters, shuttles and blastboats, and can even berth the smaller capital ships for field repairs.

Nebula-class Star Destroyer: The current iteration of the Nebula maintains their venerable predecessor’s fame for being nimble, accurate and powerful, while maintaining a relatively small profile.

Endurance-class Star Carrier: The sister-design of the Nebula, working on the same hull. It instead serves as the main starfighter carrier of the GADF.

Majestic-class Heavy Cruiser: Arguably the GADF’s backbone, and certainly the most commonly-seen ship. It is a powerful, versatile ship capable of fulfilling the full spectrum of roles assigned to cruisers.

Interdictor-class Cruiser: Valuable and vulnerable assets, currently built on the same hull as the Majestic-class, these are employed to force enemies out of hyperspace or prevent them from escaping into it.

Sacheen-class Light Escort: Typically employed as an escort for other ships, with a focus on engaging enemy vessels of similar or smaller size, and screening against missiles.

Agave-class Picket ship: Normally employed as a scout ship, it employs passive stealth and sensor systems that make it hard to spot at long ranges, while allowing it to reconnoiter with a high degree of accuracy. In battle it typically escorts larger, tougher ships.

Starfighters: The GADF has integrated all of their starfighter forces into only three designs, all of which are built on variations of the same frame and share many of the same parts. The initial design is called the Defender, and is based on the centuries-old New Republic Starfighter, while there are also Bomber and Interceptor variants. All these starfighters carry a highly-miniaturized class-12 Hyperdrive, which is used for tactical flexibility instead of for independent operation.

The Starfighter Corps

The non-naval counterpart to the Defense Fleet, the GASC has inherited a long tradition that was born in the fire of the Galactic Civil War half a millennium ago, and they aspire to maintain the high standards and performance that made that service legendary during the foundation of the New Republic and later Galactic Alliance.

The backbone of the GASC is composed of only two capital ships, both of them variants of Defense Fleet designs:

Impellor-S Heavy Carrier: These are modified from the naval design in significant ways. They forego ground forces, landing ships and the ability to berth smaller capital ships for more starfighter capacity, as well as superior sensor and communications systems;

Endurance-S Star Carrier: These have weaker weaponry than their naval counterparts, but instead have the facilities and supplies to carry and maintain starfighter forces for prolonged periods of time.

Neither capital ship is seen with any frequency, as in all but the most complex engagements they will be just outside the star system where the engagement is occurring.

Unlike the navy, with its few and limited starfighter designs, the Starfighter Corps counts with a wide variety of starfighters, from the smallest interceptors to heavy bombers big enough to count as gunships according to the Anaxes War College System. All of these starfighters are equipped with class-1 Hyperdrives, allowing them to operate at long ranges away from bases or capital ships.

The Army

The GAA are the ground force element of the Alliance’s military. While they do possess starships of their own, these are troop transports and support ships, such that no true parallel can be drawn from this service to the other two main branches.

The war doctrine of the GAA relies on information and air superiority, making ample use of aerial droid scouts, small platoon-level forces for reconnaissance and infiltration, and only rarely do they cede to pitched battle.

Nearly every GAA platoon is attached to a surface transport ship, which provides both mobility for the platoon but also holds heavy weaponry and aerial probe droids which the platoon can deploy to accomplish their goals. This is the backbone unit-size for the GAA, in accordance with the force’s avoidance of large scale direct combat.

At a much larger scale, every division is composed of nearly twenty thousand personnel, all of them housed in an 800-meter assault ship, a descendant of the Acclamator class. These vessels are not fit for space combat, but are capable of going into atmosphere or even landing on ground or water. They each carry a tactical mix of regiments, including heavy regiments with tanks and artillery, and attached air support atmospheric fighters.

There is some degree of specialization at the Division level. The most common types of divisions are Tactical (the typical, as described above), Armor, Air, Water and Fast Assault.

The Guard

The secret paramilitary police force of the GA, the Guard were founded more than four centuries ago, during the turbulent period of the GA’s founding. Ever since then, they have been an open secret: dark ships and dark uniforms are sighted on occasion, but official reports are non-existent, and the public is kept largely unaware of their activities or the extent of their force.

The Guard is not a large force on the galactic scale, with its strongest assets being liaisons into every intelligence organization, civilian or military, within the GA, augmented with their own forces of scouts, spies and slicers. With this ample access to information, and with unusually broad autonomy given to even mid-ranking officers within the GAG, the organization is small in numbers but well-resourced and capable of acting quickly and decisively to defend the best interests of the Alliance.

The most commonly-sighted GAG force are their shock troopers, trained to breach points of interest and retrieve or eliminate targets. Those are most commonly deployed either with sensor-resistant transport ships, or using local assets commandeered by the Guard. The extent of this paramilitary ground force is unknown, but they are famed as being highly-trained, highly-disciplined and have since their foundation counted with the occasional force-user as officer.

The Guard’s fleet is rarely seen, or at least rarely recognized for what it is. Their space forces are equipped with special transponders that can be made to identify them as regular GA Defense Fleet ships, such that they could only ever be recognized with a direct, close-up visual, due to the matte black finish added onto their ships. All of their ships are modified, with many systems automated and numerous functions taken over by droids, leading to crew requirements that are a fraction of the normal for ships of the equivalent classes, at the cost of some loss in effectiveness and organic creativity.

Disposition of Forces

Core Defense Force

Stationed at Uviuy, this force serves a dual purpose. From their base of operations, they are capable of jumping with relative speed to any location in the Galactic Core, they are also at a trunk of several hyperlanes leading to the Galactic North, enabling rapid response to action from that origin.

GADF element:
  • 1 Viscount;
  • 1 Bulwark;
  • 1 Impellor;
  • 2 Nebula;
  • 2 Endurance;
  • 10 Majestic;
  • 4 Interdictor;
  • 20 Sacheen;
  • 10 Agave;
  • 53 Starfighter Squadrons (beyond capital ship complements).
GAA element:
  • 30 units of Light Infantry;
  • 150 units of Heavy Infantry;
  • 135 units of Light Machine;
  • 20 units of Heavy Machine;
  • 1 Assault Ship (10 Heavy Machine).
Northern Response Fleet

Stationed at Sy Mirth, this is a rapid response force positioned between the Sith Empire and the northern end of Hutt Space, where the New Imperials are also active.

GADF element:
  • 1 Bulwark;
  • 1 Impellor;
  • 2 Nebula;
  • 2 Endurance;
  • 10 Majestic;
  • 4 Interdictor;
  • 20 Sacheen;
  • 10 Agave;
  • 44 Starfighter Squadrons (beyond capital ship complements).
GAA element:
  • 30 units of Light Infantry;
  • 150 units of Heavy Infantry;
  • 135 units of Light Machine;
  • 20 units of Heavy Machine;
  • 1 Assault Ship (10 Heavy Machine).
GASC element:
  • 2 Impellor-S;
  • 4 Endurance-S;
  • 288 pairs of Heavy Bombers;
  • 36 Starfighter Squadrons (beyond capital ship complements).
Slice Light Response Force

Stationed at Bothawui, this force is intended to keep peace in the galactic East. Although based on Bothawui, it is typically spread throughout the entire region in small patrols, keeping the borders with Hutt Space safe.

GAA element:
  • 30 units of Light Infantry;
  • 150 units of Heavy Infantry;
  • 135 units of Light Machine;
  • 20 units of Heavy Machine;
  • 1 Assault Ship (10 Heavy Machine).
GASC element:
  • 2 Impellor-S;
  • 4 Endurance-S;
  • 288 pairs of Heavy Bombers;
  • 36 Starfighter Squadrons (beyond capital ship complements).
Terminus Observation Unit

Intended to keep an eye on the galactic South, most of this force doesn't technically exist, and instead is portrayed as being a roaming GADF force. Much of their time is spent in border maintenance and occasional armed espionage across the border. The backbone of the force is stationed at Eriadu.

GAG element:
  • 1 Impellor;
  • 2 Majestic;
  • 1 Interdictor;
  • 1 Sacheen;
  • 2 Agave;
  • 7 Starfighter Squadrons (beyond capital ship complements).
The Secret Force

Much of the Galactic Alliance Guard is not gathered in any one place. They roam the galaxy, moving to wherever they are needed, with no base to call home and only adhoc supply lines. This is not a true force, but rather a listing of these elements which are not accounted for in any force description within the GA.

  • 2 Impellor;
  • 8 Majestic;
  • 3 Interdictor;
  • 5 Sacheen;
  • 6 Agave;
  • 46 Elite Infantry (double-strength Heavy Infantry);
  • 4 Units of Stealth Transports;
  • 20 Starfighter Squadrons (beyond capital ship complements).
