The Kadeshi

Sentient / Sapient?:
Yes

Homeworld & Current Location:
New Concord

The Kadeshi are a race of warrior-slaves in the eternal service of the Kingdom of New Concordia and the Concordian Council. Their origins are unclear; popular theory holds that the Concordian Council defeated the Kadeshi some three to four thousand years ago and enslaved the entire race as reparations for the war. Another theory, far more popular amongst the Council, is that Kadeshi were originally a primitive, semi-intelligent species whom they uplifted - thereby making the New Concordian Kingdom a benevolent entity rather than a nation of brutal slavers.

It makes little difference to the Kadeshi themselves. The mere notion of ‘rights’ was burned from them generations ago; they’re thoroughly conditioned to obey their masters, and obey they do! Kadeshi are quick to bend their knees; even the most hardened Kadeshi warrior-slave will kiss his master’s boot if commanded, and they’re quick to throw themselves in the line of fire to protect their masters. They are under the ultimate authority of the New Concordians and both parties are keenly aware of it.

New Concordian slave owners often dictate all aspects of their property’s lives: their clothing, their habits, their meals, their sleeping arrangements, everything. Kadeshi have no privacy and no rights; the only exception are those lucky enough to be given citizenship by the Lords of Concord. And even those who are freed are at severe risk; a free Kadeshi is despised by the New Concordians, and many citizens will go to great lengths to abduct and re-enslave any free Kadeshi! (Free Kadeshi, as a result, have a high suicide rate - most would rather die free than be collared once more.)

New Concordian desire for control over their slaves is such that the Kadeshi are rarely, if ever, allowed to bear children; well over ninety percent of the Kadeshi are vat-grown and engineered. This has given rise to different ‘models’ of Kadeshi; the most dangerous are the Cabur-shii, a warrior ‘model’ whose members are uniformly two meters in height and sturdy in build. Cabur-kai are the ‘grenadiers’, and stand 2.3 meters tall. They weigh several times more than a human and are far stronger; they’re even able to go toe-to-toe with a Wookiee and win! Though not especially agile, they’re fast for their size and possess sharp reflexes and keen senses. Both Cabur variants are frequently employed as guardians, and huge armies of Cabur-shii with Cabur-kai officers and ‘shock’ infantry are fielded by the Rakiir Council. (The armies are also frequently rented or outright sold to anyone with the credits to burn.)

On the note of the Cabur-kai - the vast majority of that subspecies is heavily augmented. This is a necessity, as they are made to wear a form of exoarmor. This primitive hardsuit requires a slew of sacrifices, however. The arms and legs are replaced with prosthetics, while myriad augments are installed throughout the spine, skull, and torso. Additionally, the torso is heavily reinforced with synthetic muscle to ensure that their body isn’t violently ripped asunder by their armor. These augments are usually installed immediately after they’re ‘born’ from their cloning tubes, and steadily upgraded as they physically mature.

Each Cabur-Kai is bound to the armor he’s issued and can wear no other; the armor is likewise bound to the Kadeshi inside it. While Cabur-Kai are sometimes found without their armor when off-duty, they’re never comfortable outside it. The suit is a comforting second skin, and wearing it is a badge of honor that no other is allowed.

More common and far more popular than the Cabur are the Adate-shii; ‘produced’ in a bewildering array of fur patterns and colors and a wide range of physiques, the Adate are the worker caste. They possess the sharp minds of the Cabur-shii but lack the viciousness and predatory instincts of their warrior kin, and while quite strong they are docile. They are generally no bigger than a human, standing between 1.83 and 1.9 meters in height for both male and female. They are widely employed in all walks of life; shopkeepers, nurses, teachers, housekeepers, laborers, drivers, pilots; they are ubiquitous throughout the New Concordian Kingdom. Though generally docile, Adate-shii can be provoked to violence - generally, though, the only way to enrage one is to threaten a child under their care. Many families have one or two Adate-shii as general helpers within their household; wealthy families tend to have a small army of Adate-shii.

A somewhat uncommon breed is the highly specialized Goran-kai. Physically large and rugged, but with the temperament of the docile Adate-shii, the Goran-kai stand at 2.3 meters - as tall as a Cabur-kai! Bred for their brute strength, slow tempers, and exceptional patience, male and female Goran-kai are employed primarily as caretakers, firefighters, and first responders, as well as a variety of jobs where brute strength and endurance are vital qualities. Their gentle temperaments make them popular caretakers for New Concordian children, and their size makes them popular escorts and protectors for New Concordian nobles who cannot afford a Cabur-Kai.

The most common but least publicly acknowledged breed is the Di’kutla-shii; uniformly short at 1.7 meters, they are employed in a bewildering array of tasks ranging from the obscenely technical to the disgusting and dangerous. From sewer workers to reactor technicians, from grave diggers to hydrofarm techs, from asteroid miners to foundry workers, the short Di’kutla-shii can be found anywhere a respectable citizen of the New Concordian Kingdom wouldn’t be caught dead. Despite the New Concordian aversion to the Di’kutla-shii, the Kingdom survives on the backs of the billions of Di’kutla-shii it has bred as brute labor.

The last of the breeds - and by far the rarest - are the Jetiise-shii and the Jetiise-kai; Kadeshi with innate force sensitivity. The Jetiise-shii are the shorter of the two branches of Jetiise; the Jetiise-kai are the taller and physically sturdier. Both are born as a result of manufacturing ‘defects’, and so the moniker simply refers to their size rather than any physical characteristics. At any rate, all Jetiise are feared and, more often than not, destroyed when discovered. But sometimes the Rakiir Council finds a use for such monstrosities and allows them to live - other times they simply go unnoticed. To date, no Jetiise has escaped New Concord - but there’s always a first.

All breeds have one thing in common - sterility. Kadeshi are not born so much as they are manufactured in massive, monolithic cloning facilities. Hordes of labcoat-clad geneticists and medical researchers are behind every thousands-strong batch of Kadeshi ‘born’ every day. Cabur-shii and Cabur-kai alike are born from gleaming steel tanks, just like their Adate-shii and Goran-kai brethren, just like the mass-produced Di’kutla-shii. While there are many thousands of different ‘models’ for each race, they are uniformly ‘perfect’ specimens carefully chosen from the most promising Kadeshi bloodlines - the less promising bloodlines were simply sterilized and worked to death thousands of years ago.

Despite the use of thousands of genetic templates for the different races, it’s still common to find Kadeshi who look and sound precisely the same. As such, owners often allow - and sometimes encourage - their property to dye and alter the patterns of their fur and to wear colorful, easy-to-identify clothing. In settings where such individualism is discouraged, less personal markings are typically used; Cabur-kai are branded with their unit markings and crest and their furs are dyed with stripes in colors and patterns specified by their owners, while Cabur-shii are ear-tagged, collared, and branded with a bar-code or some other unique identifying mark that cannot be obscured by their pelts. Di’kutla-shii are the least fortunate; their furs are dyed according to the job they are trained for and they’re made to wear a matching jumpsuit.

Beyond sterility, the Kadeshi share several physical traits in common. First and foremost, Kadeshi are strong and possess incredible physical endurance. Kadeshi muscle and skeletal tissue is 1.5 to 2 times as dense as that of similar feline races, such as the Goran Horansi or the Trianii, and their organ systems are more redundant in structure than other races. The net effect is that they are stronger than humans and near-humans, but only the largest Kadeshi subspecies can rival the strength of species such as Wookies. The most immediate difference in internal anatomy, though, is that of their cardiovascular system. Kadeshi possess twin hearts, and can actually survive the loss of one - provided medical attention is provided swiftly, of course. The loss of a heart is devastating and requires advanced medical care and prompt assistance. The loss of a heart while alone is typically fatal, due to the immediately debilitating effects of cardiac failure and trauma.

Kadeshi possess extraordinary senses of smell and hearing, and their sight is somewhat above average. They see further into the IR spectrum than humans, and have excellent night vision. Their eyes are slower to adjust when transitioning out of darkness and into light, though, rendering them susceptible to bouts of momentary blindness induced by bright environments.

Their bodies are efficient when it comes to blood filtration, too. A pair of nodule-like organs attached to their liver assist with the removal of toxins, and help ensure that the Kadeshi can survive contact with many simple toxins native to New Concord. Other poisons, especially non-native ones, may simply be rendered debilitating, or the Kadeshi may simply suffer an especially prolonged death as their body fights the toxin.

Their eyes possess a set of nictating membranes. These secondary eyelids help them to see underwater and protect their eyes in dusty conditions. Next, their skeletal system - much like a common housecat, Kadeshi have extra vertebrae in their spines and a long tail that assists with maneuverability. Their tails are prehensile, and can be used for simple tasks such as picking up cups or manipulating simple items. Kadeshi shoulders aren’t as rigid as those of humans and near-humans, and allow some measure of flexibility - they can squeeze through spaces a little too tight for other races to fit, and their flexibility and resilience helps them to survive falls that would kill or injure most races. Their resilience to falling injuries is helped by an instinctive ‘righting reflex’, similar to what is seen in housecats.

Their feet are plantigrade and reasonably humanlike in overall structure, but their hands are heavy, powerful, and somewhat paw-like, with thick and sturdy digits which each conceal a razor-sharp claw in lieu of a fingernail. Their jaws are dominated by vicious predatory fangs, but the rearmost teeth are molars and help the Kadeshi to enjoy a truly omnivorous diet. While they possess a frighteningly powerful bite, Kadeshi are trained to never bite, and the punishment for biting - even in self-defense - is frequently euthanasia.

The last physical traits possessed by all Kadeshi are those of reflexes. Kadeshi move and think quickly, and this - combined with their strength and agility - makes them a fast and physically capable species.

Their physical attributes aside, the Kadeshi are on a whole treated relatively well insofar as slaves go. They’re not horribly abused and they, if nothing else, always have hot meals, warm beds, and clothes on their backs. Many Kadeshi are given a monthly stipend by their owners, which they’re allowed to spend as they choose. The Concord Council also requires that the Kadeshi be given one day every other week to rest, but recommends that they be given two days a week. (This recommendation is rarely followed.)

That’s not to say everything’s rosy for them, though. The Kadeshi are obligated to serve their masters’ every whim, no matter how strange or twisted. Even the outright impossible they’re forced to attempt. Failure to obey is punished harshly; a particularly resistant slave may be sent to a local court along with evidence of their disobedience. If the court agrees - or the owner has the right connections - the slave is sent straight to a ‘Reconditioning Center’. Kadeshi sent to a center are tortured for days on end by a ‘breaker’ and subjected to all manner of conditioning; if their behavior is deemed to have been sufficiently corrected, then they’re sent back to their owner. If nothing works, then they may be flagged as ‘rebellious’ and sent to work in a mine for the remainder of their life. The especially problematic may simply be killed outright. And the unlucky may be sold to a particularly sadistic noble for a ‘Hunt’ - a sport where a Kadeshi is set free and then hunted down by a gang of nobles. There are worse fates, too, and none of them are illegal under New Concordian Law.

Speaking of less-than-rosy things, the cloning process is decidedly unpleasant. Kadeshi are artificially aged in their tubes until they’re an adolescent - the process takes approximately eight years, and they’re ‘born’ at an age approximating a 14-year old. While in the tube, they’re subjected to a constant stream of flash-learning lessons; these lessons allow them to immediately function after they’re ‘born’ from their tubes, as they form a comprehensive education program that is an adequate (if not ideal) substitute for traditional schooling.

After ‘birth’, they’re subjected to a six-year programme of flash learning, accelerated classes, and heavy physical training. The result; a Kadeshi requires fourteen years to grow and gain the mental and physical maturity of a twenty-four year old Kadeshi. In total, the creation of a Kadeshi requires eight years of cloning and six years of education and physical conditioning - fourteen years in all, at the end of which a Kadeshi clone is physically and mentally equivalent to a twenty-four year old.

Typically speaking, more Kadeshi are produced than are anticipated to be sold; large reserves of fully mature, trained Kadeshi are kept in cryogenic storage in case it is ever necessary to rapidly replenish the Kadeshi population. (Most of the reserves are Cabur-shii and Cabur-kai, to replace those killed in military service.)

Summary of Physical Abilities:
-Strong
-Agile
-Excellent stamina
Some resilience to simple toxins from their homeworld
-Excellent senses of smell and hearing
-Above-average sight
-Excellent night vision
-Able to purr obnoxiously loudly
-
Can produce a staggeringly loud roar

Limitations:
Kadeshi take longer to transition out of low-light vision than other races, and can suffer from a ‘flashblind’ if the lighting in an area increases too rapidly for their eyes to adjust. Their keen senses render them more susceptible to irritant chemicals (such as riot control gases) and sensory weapons than other species. Sonic weapons are particularly excruciating to Kadeshi, for example. While Kadeshi are very physically sturdy, they cannot typically endure any more than a human can in a fight - a stab to the throat is just as fatal as a shot to the heart, and there’s little difference in mortality rates there when comparing a Kadeshi to a human. Their strengths are myriad but minute, with the race possessing an overall physical advantage over humans but lacking any unique or overwhelming advantages beyond those inherent to most felinoid races.

Also, they go absolutely kriffing bonkers when exposed to a catnip-like variety of spice.

Lifespan:
Kadeshi have been engineered to enjoy long lifespans, though this has not been an act of benevolence on the parts of their masters. This is to reduce overall cloning costs and to ensure that slaves can serve several generations of slaveowners. As a result of this engineering, Kadeshi hit maturity at an age approximate to 20, and remain in peak physical condition for many decades before they begin to experience any degradation. Elderly Kadeshi are typically subjected to euthanasia, to avoid the medical expenses of providing end-of-life care for those slaves who are becoming geriatric. As a result, there are exceptionally few ‘old’ Kadeshi in existence.

Kadeshi are matured to an equivalent of 14 years in their cloning tanks while being subjected to flash learning programs. They then undergo extensive physical and educational training - including additional flash learning. ‘Growing’ a Kadeshi takes 8 years, while 6 years of training typically follow. They do grow at a natural rate once removed from their cloning tanks, however, and so their ages can be approximated. Due to the growing process and accelerated aging, 14 years should be subtracted to the following date ranges to get the Kadeshi’s ‘true’ age - this subtraction accounts for both the time spent in the tank as well as artificial age acceleration.

14 - 20: Juvenile
20-120: Adult
120-160: Middle Age (Degeneration begins)
160-200: Euthanasia generally recommended. (Degeneration accelerates rapidly, results in abrupt aging and loss of independence and capability.)

Essentially, Kadeshi remain ‘adult’ for over a century, then experience sudden and rapid loss of ability ultimately culminating in death - either natural or artificially induced, though typically the latter. It is rare for Kadeshi to live beyond 150 as a result of this practice.

Language:
Kadeshi primarily speak Basic. Approximately 15% of the population speaks Mando’a as a second or third language.

Culture, History, and Politics:
As an enslaved race, the Kadeshi lack any political structure or self-governance, and their culture has been systematically oppressed and dismantled across many dozens of generations. To view more of their history, refer to the New Concord writeup.

Faction Relations:
As an enslaved species, the Kadeshi have no relations with external factions.

Intent:
The Kadeshi are designed and intended for use in an overarching Independent story arc following the efforts of a small group of disparately-minded individuals working to overthrow the New Concordian Kingdom and its slave-based culture and economy. They will be open for general use.
